Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

SSI benefits are not contingent upon the individual paying into the system prior to becoming disabled. This benefit is available to any person that cannot work due to disability. The SSI benefit is based on the individual’s income. A person applying for SSI benefits cannot receive the benefit if he or she has outside sources of income.

What is Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a needs-based program administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) designed to provide financial assistance to aged, blind, and disabled individuals who have limited income and resources. Unlike Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), SSI benefits do not require prior work credits and are funded by general tax revenues, not Social Security taxes.
